The Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is designed to provide a safe transfer of 120 VAC power from the generator to the RV distribution panel. This transfer also disconnects Shore Power at the same time.
When the generator is started, the electronic control circuitry monitors it’s AC power output and when the voltage reaches a safe level, it triggers the timing circuit and starts the 30-second timer. This 30-second delay allows the generator to reach a stable operating speed and voltage before connecting generator power to the RV. After 30-seconds, the timer triggers the SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier), which energizes the relay, which disconnects Shore Power and connects generator power.
The relay remains energized as long as generator power is available. If the generator is turned “OFF” or AC power is lost for a period of over 3-seconds, the relay will drop out and the timer circuit will restart its 30-second cycle. The relay will not re-energize until the timer completes its cycle. This feature ensures that the generator voltage is again at the proper level when connected to the RV preventing possible damage to the generator or AC appliances. |

In 1993, after fifteen years of developing electronic switching power supplies for other industries, Progressive Dynamics began manufacturing its first electronic power converter, the Inteli-power 9000® series, for the Recreational Vehicle market. This new design gave the RV manufacturer a reliable converter that was smaller, lighter, and provided regulated and filtered DC power to all 12-volt RV circuits. During extensive testing on the recharge cycle of batteries, our engineers soon realized the need to develop an intelligent battery charging system using a microprocessor. By 1996, they had designed a circuit that could continuously monitor battery charge status and then use this data to automatically increase or decrease the charging voltage as needed. This microprocessor has become the heart of the Total Charge Management System® (TCMS). |
